What’s Punk Rope?
Created in 2004, Punk Rope is fitness turned up to 11.
It’s a fun blend of recess and boot camp, which combines creative calisthenics, group drills, relay races, rope jumping, and core
training.
Students come in all ages, shapes, and sizes and run the gamut from couch potatoes to gym rats.
Classes are themed and celebrate everything from Super Heroes to the Super Bowl.
Punk Rope has been offered in community centers, health clubs, colleges, schools, rock and roll clubs, art galleries, bowling alleys,
and city parks.
Punk Rope is included in the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s “Healthy Schools Program Resource Database” and is the author of
the physical activity chapter for The After school Corporation’s “Building Healthy Communities” curriculum.
Isn’t jumping rope for kids?
It’s for everybody! Rope jumping offers incomparable fitness benefits and is portable, inexpensive, efficient, relatively gentle on the
joints, fun, and challenging.
I haven’t jumped rope in forever. Will I be ok?
Absolutely! Rope jumping is much easier to learn than you’d expect and we’ll teach you cool resting moves so you can look suave
while catching your breath.
How many calories will I burn?
First, you should be very suspicious when a fitness class makes claims about calories burned. Caloric expenditure depends on many
factors including your weight, fitness level, and work rate. That said, a 150-pound person jumping rope at 145 revolutions per minute—
which is a moderate pace—will burn approximately 13 calories per minute or roughly the same as they would burn running at an 8-
minute-per-mile pace.
What are Punk Rope’s primary fitness benefits?
Punk Rope can improve your heart, lungs, bones, figure, coordination, and balance. In more technical language that means it can
improve your aerobic capacity, anaerobic capacity body composition, bone density, kinesthetic awareness, and proprioception. If those
terms don’t mean anything to you, ask your physician about them, if you’re lucky enough to be able to afford one.
What should I bring to class?
Just bring yourself since we supply jump ropes. Wear sneakers with good cushioning in the forefoot and comfortable workout clothes.
If you’d like to buy a rope so you can practice at home, click here. We offer two lines of ropes: the Slasher and the Revolver. The
Slasher, which is made in the USA by workers with disabilities is adjustable, heavier, and has ergonomic handles. The Revolver is
adjustable, super light, fast, and easy on the wallet.
I’d like to bring my son and daughter to class.
We love having children in class, but check with the host facility first before schlepping your little one to the gym.
